I returned to my alma mater as a staff assistant technical director, scenic designer, and charge, working on Letters to Sala, a powerful play based on the memoir of Arwa Al-Mujahed, which chronicles her Jewish grandmother’s survival during the Holocaust. Through a series of letters and stories, the play tells the journey of Sala, from Poland to Yemen, exploring profound themes of survival, identity, and family. The scenic design takes an abstract approach: on stage right, a frame represents Sala’s home in 1940s Poland, while stage left depicts a New York City apartment in the early 2000s. The "past" side of the stage features a muted color palette with brown wood grains and dry-brushed blue tones, evoking a somber and historical atmosphere. In contrast, the "contemporary" side uses more vibrant, colorful dry-brush techniques, symbolizing a lighter, more hopeful period.
